Hover-flies - the Egg

an egg of a hover-fly placed in a colony of aphids Grown-up hover-flies feed on nectar an pollen. In contrast to the adults, the larvae live of a variety of different food sources, since in the run of evolution they were able to adapt to different habitats.

Some species are vegetarians, fully or partially, others live of decay, such as disintegrating wood or of dung, many are carnivores and live of other insects, a food source that contains more proteins. Most of the carnivores live of aphids, some of galls or of the larvae of bees and wasps.

Here a hover-fly placed an egg in a colony of aphids, making it easy for the larvae hatching to find food. The aphids are vegetarians and do not bother about the egg. They do not realize the danger hidden in the egg.
