After having placed the eggs in the cup, the female shuts the cup producing the same dense fabric of bright white silk as in the lining. In addition, she wraps a layer of the material around the supporting walls, giving a somewhat irregular shape to the cocoon. This layer will ensure a microclimate of it s own to the cocoon, maintaining a certain air humidity inside and buffering temperatures. This is important since the youngsters will hatch soon and will hibernate in the cocoon. |
