The females of Misumena vatia become about 10 mm long. The males are much smaller, only about 4 mm long. The sexes quite differ in body size - but the males are predators at least as ferocious and mean as the females. In this picture, a Hoverfly (Neoascia spec.) has become the prey of the male. The males use the same strategy as the females: a mortal bite in the neck of the victim - from the front. As the females, the males may vary in color, but they can always be distinguished from small females by the coiling pattern around their front legs. |
