The moths lay their eggs on a variety of plants: Stinging Nettles, (? Lamium), (?Galeobdolon), Forget-me-not, (?Stachys), (?Origanum vulgare), (?Echium) (?Petasites) and others, the leaves of which the caterpillars feed on. Once José found a caterpillar that had stopped feeding. Full and fat it crept about, seeking for a hide to make its cocoon and to turn into a chrysalis. The deeply carved segments indicate its maturity - the larva is in a state not far away from stripping off its skin for the very last time. José was hoping to take pictures of it turning into the pupa, so he kept watching it for a while. |
