At one end of the caterpillar, the skin had split. The enlargement shows that each of the white spots was a tiny larva - an obvious case of parasitism. A different insect had managed to get its eggs into the caterpillar, from which the larvae had hatched and had then eaten the inside of it. Due to the size of the larvae José suspected them to belong to the (?Chalicididae) family, small relatives of wasps and bees that are of dark and shiny color. |
