The caterpillar eventually got to the ground and decided to weave its cocoon in a wilted leaf of a beech tree. While doing so, it lost some of its fresh green colour and turned a little paler. At one time it paused, then continued to weave for a short time, but its movements looked somewhat tired and slow. Finally, it stopped moving and remained motionless in the unfinished cocoon, that had not even reached half of what it was meant to be. This behaviour was very unusual. Usually, a caterpillar that once started to weave, continues to do so until the cocoon is finished. |
